President Donald Trump said Wednesday that he has “no problems” with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi.
Trump also took shots at both Democrats, accusing them of “not getting it” from him and “not being as smart” as he is.
Trump made the comments on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”
“I think the Democrats are not as smart as I am, they’re not as tough as I’m tough, they don’t understand me as well as I understand them,” Trump said.
Schumer and Pelosi responded by saying they would be “happy” to meet with Trump to discuss the president’s “dramatic” tweets.
“If there is a time to be in public and have a conversation with him, it is today,” Pelosi told reporters.
“I’m sure there is.
I’m just going to have to wait and see,” she added.
Trump has repeatedly criticized the Democrats’ behavior since taking office.
The president tweeted Wednesday that Schumer and Pelosi “weren’t as tough” as Trump, a comment he said was “ridiculous.”
“Chuck Schumer & Nancy Pelosi have not been as tough on crime as I’ve been on crime.
They are not tough,” Trump tweeted.
“I have no problems with them, and I have many, many problems with Democrats!”
The president’s comments come as Trump continues to push back on Democrats’ criticism of his administration’s handling of the crisis in Puerto Rico.
He said the administration is “doing a tremendous job” and “taking care of our people.”
“They are doing a great job,” Trump told Fox News on Tuesday.
“We’ve been doing a tremendous, tremendous job.
We’re doing a lot of good things.”
Democrats have accused Trump of using the hurricane to boost his political career.
“When you have a disaster like Puerto Rico, where people are dying and you are taking care of them, it’s an example of how desperate you are to make money and to make yourself more powerful,” Schumer said on MSNBC Wednesday.
“The president is the poster child for that,” he added.
“It’s not his fault.
We can’t have this kind of president.”
